Hunting & feeding

Hunting has many forms.

Between active stalking, motionless waiting and capture in a web.

Waiting for an opportunity

An ambush hunter may remain still for a long time before reacting rapidly. Crab spiders wait on flowers and other surfaces, while burrowing species may hunt around an entrance. Apparent inactivity is part of the strategy. Success depends partly on prey passing within reach and on the spider detecting it in time.

Keeping prey in sight

Jumping spiders use vision to orient and stalk before leaping. Wolf spiders and other hunters move over ground or among plants. They do not form one uniform behavioural type. Hunting style, activity period, senses and habitat interact. Anatomy both enables and constrains particular movements, making different strategies useful in different settings.

Hunting is not hostility to people

A rapid strike at prey differs from a defensive response to disturbance. Moving in our direction does not automatically demonstrate a targeted attack. Our comparison sections distinguish these situations. Deliberately provoking an animal for dramatic footage tells us less about its ordinary life than careful observation in its habitat.
