A large ground dweller
Theraphosa blondi lives in rainforest regions of northern South America, using silk-lined retreats around roots and in the ground. Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports up to about 12 centimetres in body length and 28 centimetres in leg span. Such maxima do not describe an average individual and are not a scale for our illustration.
The name is not a menu
Despite the name, birds are not its regular food. Invertebrates are frequent prey, while small vertebrates can also be taken when opportunities arise. It hunts on the ground rather than relying on a large orb web. Diet and retreat use explain its life better than a collection of dramatic images showing unusually large prey.
Defence calls for distance
Urticating hairs and threat postures are among its defences. These features make neither a handling demonstration nor an aggression ranking appropriate. Large mass also does not establish how medically important a venom is. Our size section separates body length, leg span and mass. Images should explain scale without manufacturing fear.
