More eyes do not simply mean sharper vision
Many spiders have eight eyes, while others have fewer. Their number, size and arrangement vary, without producing a simple ranking of visual ability. Vibrations matter greatly to many web builders. Jumping spiders instead use well-developed vision in hunting and encounters with other spiders. Different pairs of eyes can contribute different kinds of information.
Sensing beyond direct contact
Sensory hairs respond to touch or air movement, while other organs detect deformation of the cuticle. Web vibrations can carry information about prey, a potential mate or disturbance. A web is therefore more than a trap: its mechanical connections form part of a spider’s information environment. Different signals need not produce the same response.
Observing without inventing motives
A spider turning toward us may be examining a stimulus. That does not establish aggression or human-like curiosity. We first describe the visible movement, then consider testable explanations. An encounter with a zebra spider remains fascinating without claiming emotions or intentions that cannot be demonstrated from the movement alone.
