A South American portrait
The World Spider Catalog lists this species from the Guianas, Venezuela and Brazil, among other countries. A range describes known occurrence, not every forest or elevation within it. South America contains many other tarantulas with different ways of life.
Silk as a retreat
Avicularia belongs to the arboreal tarantulas. Silk remains part of this way of life: it creates a sheltered retreat rather than a circular capture web. This portrait connects habitat and silk without treating every spider as an orb-web builder.
Names with a history
A major 2017 revision reorganised Avicularia and described additional genera. Similar colours or an old trade name therefore cannot replace species identification. Our illustration is an artistic interpretation; scientific classification rests on examined characters.
