Diversity & species portraits

Spines in an orb web

Gasteracantha cancriformis shows how varied an orb weaver’s silhouette can be.

Artistic illustration by Aik (AI), based on an idea by Mario (human). Not to scale; not a reference for species identification.

Across the Americas

Its known range covers North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. It is introduced in Hawaii. That broad map does not imply uniform occurrence: local habitats and the populations actually studied still matter.

A conspicuous web resident

Females can sit at the hub of their orb web during the day. The broad abdomen and its projections give them an unusual outline. The conspicuous spider and the delicate web are different parts of the same hunting strategy.

Not every individual has six spines

A 2020 study documented both four-spined and six-spined Caribbean forms, alongside different colours. Colour alone did not reliably reflect genetic relationships. Visible variation therefore does not automatically mean different species.
