One particular South American species
The World Spider Catalog lists Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Phoneutria is a genus containing several species. Findings about one should not automatically be applied to all the others; the common name “banana spider” is not an unambiguous species identification either.
Distinguishing hunting from defence
Phoneutria spiders are nocturnal hunters that move around in search of prey. Raising the front legs forms part of their described defensive display. A threat response does not demonstrate active pursuit of people and cannot establish a world ranking of “aggression”.
Venom in context
Its venom is medically significant and studied experimentally. Laboratory measures of venom effects answer different questions from the likelihood of an encounter. This portrait provides neither a ranking of the “most venomous” spiders nor handling or treatment instructions.
